Captains Dinners

We wish both Captain Peter Duffy and Lady Captain Theresa Mc Mahon the best of luck for their Captains dinners that take place this evening and next Friday respectively. It all plans to be a great evening with fantastic entertainment. If you have not already, please ensure you have paid for your tickets.

Course

The course has taken a lot of rainfall over the last 3/4 months and continues to see persistent rainfall daily. With the club decision to drop to 12 holes for the winter period, we hope to see a needed rest for some holes on the course, with a rotation of 12-hole loops being used.

Roping is there to be always adhered to. It is wet and slippery so please always use the paths for your safety and ALWAYS take a divot bag and repair your divots. Now more than even members will be taking sizable chunks from the ground, so we need to be replacing it.

Bar & Catering

From Monday 6th November we will move to our Winter schedule of opening and closing hours in the bar and clubhouse. Please see attached bar and catering opening times

Please note the times for opening and closing should the course be closed for the day.

Buggies

Buggy usage has been sparce and we are sorry that members have not been able to get out as much as they would like. Without any promises of dry weather from the meteorologists, it is hard to see when the course will be dry enough again to allow buggies.

If you can get out for the exercise but don’t have a trolley, Tony has a couple of electric trolleys available for rent on a daily basis, so please ring the pro shop to book them.

Course Open / Closed

Ring Ring Ring! Yes, it’s the good old-fashioned phone!

Robby and the course staff will have the phone updated daily as close to 7am as possible each day from now throughout the winter. As a backup, we will also update the course status on Club V1 App (if you don’t have it, I would suggest you download it) and this will generally be updated between 8-9am. Again, the phone is the earliest and primary method.

We will NOT be sending any updates via emails moving forward due to inconsistency of email.

Winter League

This weekend sees the first of 8 weekends of the qualifying stage for the men’s winter league. 128 players have signed up to play each weekend (Fri – Sun) with 4 group teams vying for their place in the semi finals early next year. Good luck to all.

This year we have the amazing Sponsorship from our very own Joe Walsh and Hernon Crash Repairs yet again. Thank you for the generosity and continued sponsorship of this flagship winter event.

Course & Greens

Between record levels of rainfall in July, torrential downfalls in August and Storm Betty just passed, the course and greens staff along with volunteers have had no shortage of work to do in what should be sunny calm conditions.

Our volunteers as seen in the picture have done amazing work over the last* 3/4 days to get the course back to its usual condition (with some *minor & major trees now missing!). A big thank you to all members who turned up to do this work.

Looking Forward: Pole Forking will take place on the 4th & 5th September where the course will be closed for the day. As part of this period, we are also looking to clean and repaint the car park line.
As a result, we will also look to close the clubhouse to all members for these days. A further notification and communication will be sent out advising, however if you are planning on golfing elsewhere, please make sure to have all your gear with you on Sunday evening 03/09 as we cannot guarantee access to he clubhouse on the 4th or 5th Sept.

Competitions

Ladies Results

Despite the conditions and the ever wondering ‘is the course going to be playable’ we have be flying through our summer majors over the last number of weeks

First up was our Lady Captains Prize Day. Lady Captain, Theresea Mc Mahon, unfortunately had her prize shortened to just 18 holes taking place on day 2. Not stopping the Ladies of Forrest Little having their traditional cakes and Tinto de Verano on Day 1, even the rain didn’t dampen the spirits. Finally, there was a winner with Nicola Gregan coming out on top with a superb 67 nett.

Next up was the Professionals Prize, postponed from earlier in the year, where Bernie Sullivan beat Fidelma Ryan on countback, both shooting 39 points.

Finally, Lady President Tina Shevlin’s prize was won by Ruth McQuillan with a fantastic 42 points, beating Danielle Kiernan into 2nd place shooting 40 points.

Well done all!

Mens Results
With Captains Prize behind us, we had 2 medals, Blue Stake Series final and Presidents Prize all in quick succession.

July Medal was won by Dermot Wilkins shooting a 66 Nett followed by Joe Lavin shooting 65 Nett. Exceptional scores given the weather conditions both were played in! Well done lads!

Our flagship Blue Stakes Series continued to go from strength to strength this year with over 500 entries (141 visitors) into the 10 week competition, with 205 different players playing. After a tough 10 weeks qualifying, the final shootout saw Conor McMahon emerge as the victor shooting an impressive 71, as the 12 finalists found the pressure tough going. Conor had managed to qualify on the very last card in week 10, on a break of ties earning him the coveted 12th spot in the final.

Presidents day, which by the miracle of our Greenkeepers getting out onto the course to clear the debris left from Betty, managed to have the course playable for Sean Dunne’s President Prize day. Through calming winds and sunshine, Michael Daly battled hard and pipped Martin Kelly on a countback (both shooting 38pts) to win the Presidents Prize. With 186 players on the day, it is clear to see just how popular the day and our President is with all.

Teams - Match Reports

Adult Teams

Our 2 sole standing adult teams fought out their finals over the last couple of weekends and unfortunately despite putting every effort in, couldnt bring home the silverware this year.

Barton Shield
Our Barton Shield team of Allan Kiernan (Captain), Luke Dwyer, Jack McDonnell & Ciaran Gregan were beaten in the final on the 17th & 18th holes. The team squeezed passed Greenore on a playoff hole in the semi final but Castleknock (holders) took advantage of their home course draw to win the North Leinster divison. Well done to all involved and im sure we next year will be a step further!

O'Grady Cup
The O'Grady Cup led by Paula Sheeran and Sean Dooley, had a tough battle with Westmanstown (home and away legs) where after the away leg, trailed Westmanstown 3.5 - 1.5. Despite in impending storm coming, support in the droves came along to follow the tightly fought matches, but unfortunately, with Forrest Little pairing giving a shot on the 18th, Wesmanstown managed to get a half and as a result, retain the O'Grady trophy.

Junior Teams

Leinster U-15 Boys
Hard luck to our Leinster U15 boys team of Cillian Gray, Dylan McDonagh and Aaron McDonagh who were narrowly beaten by The Island 2-1

The Team heading to Castletroy Golf Club are Emma McDonagh (JC), Amelia Penrose, Grace Dowdall and Amelia Lanigan. This is the 1st time ever that a Forrest Little Girls Team have won a Leinster medal and pennant for the club. They now go to represent North Leinster in the quarter finals of the All-Ireland another 1st for our Girls and Ladies of Forrest Little. We wish them all the best no doubt from all the members in Forrest Little. https://static.clubhouse.golfireland.ie/clubs/1000/uploads/championships/information%20sheet%20-%20castletroy.pdf

Our Fingal Girls team retained their League Title on 14th August in Howth GC. This team of Amelia Penrose, Amelia Lanigan, Anna Cullen and Niamh Sherlock managed to bring the trophy home for the 2nd yera running with strong performances throughout. Congrats to them

Bar Prices

We have been informed by Diageo and Colmans, 2 of our main suppliers, that their prices are increasing imminently.

Unfortunately, as a result of this, we too will have to pass on these to the members. We of course will try to keep it to a minimum where possible.

As a result, effectively Sept 1st, we have had to make some changes to the prices of some beverages outlined in the attached screenshot:

A long overdue update of the green fees for visitors has begun with the Office and Management Council where it was agreed to increase the visitor fees as well as Open competitions, where it will be reviewed at the end of the year.

Men’s Results

Captain Peter Duffy’s Prize Final Day took place last week and saw a tightly fought battle in some hot testing conditions, with Jason McDonagh (16) storming through the field to take the winner’s prize shooting 135 (71,64) beating Lee Duffy (5) by 3 shots 138 (69, 69).

Congratulations to all the winners and to Captain Peter for a superb day (and evening) of golf, food and drink, and music in the late evening. A fantastic night for all and great to see so many supporting the event.

Ladies’ Results

Captain Peter Duffy’s prize to Ladies was so tightly fought it took a break of ties or the top two Ladies to be separated, with Dierdre Miley (46) pipping Sue Somers (24) with 41 points each. Thank you to all and congratulations to all the winners.

On the day the club generated more than €17,000 from generous dontations and sponsorships of the tees, greens and raffle prizes not to mention the amazing volunteer work from everyone including the brains behind the operation ( Nick Prior, Adrienne Timmons, Paddy Quaid & Nicky Lowndes).

Course & Clubhouse

Course

With the welcome of rain after a long dry spell, the course is really taking shape with its bold green colour and healthy tree line fairways. This really is a true golf club that all members want and should be proud of!

BUT!!!!!

We can only do that if we all look after it! Too many times staff and members are seeing divot unrepaired, bunkers not ranked properly and a half dozen pitch marks on the greens.

Clubhouse

As you will notice, we have some new signage up. The only designated smoking area is located outside the members bar / main bar side door. Smoking is strictly prohibited on the terrace under the canopy.
Golf Shoes of any kind (spiked or spikeless) are not allowed in the clubhouse beyond the marked points. There is a strong disregard for this rule which needs to stop.

Please Please Please remember… This is all our club so let’s all do the best to keep it that way

Forrest Little Golf Classic

What a wonderful response from our members who turned up to support our yearly Golf Classic. The time sheet was full on the day and by and large a great day was had by all.
The final figure raised on the day amounted to a whopping €12,600 for the course staff facility.
A big thank you to all our Participants on the day and also to all our Sponsors.
While all our sponsors are important to us, a special mention to Paul Sullivan (Access Oil), the O’Brien family (O'Brien Landscaping) Dwayne Price (Grant Thornton) & Shay Leatham (Image Vision) for sponsorship above and beyond.
As you all know, the Classic doesn’t just happen, a huge amount of preparation and hard graft goes into making the day succeed.
So, sincere thanks to all who helped make the Classic - a Classic day.
You know who you are!

Course News
Robbie & the team have been working hard over the past number of weeks. The team have top dressed over 300 tonnes of sand on the fairways and high traffic areas in early October. This helped massively given the large amounts of rainfall we are experiencing this Autumn.

The team verti drained and solid tined the greens. This has helped with draining surface water faster following heavy rainfall. The green surrounds were hollow tined in parts to help remove buildup of sand and lower these areas to further help surface water drain off the putting surfaces.

Currently the team are battling the leaves and are working tirelessly to collect the leaves during the week to make the task of finding balls easier for golfers playing. This phase is nearly done so well done to team team for their great work.

The rainfall has been very persistent this Autumn which has meant the course is wetter earlier this year. For September & October 2022 we have had 93% more rainfall then the same period last year and 69% more then the long term average. The team will be roping off far more areas then usual to prevent early wear signs near the main playing surfaces. This will happen early next week.
We ask that members please keep to the roped off areas as much as possible to help the course from cutting up too much.

Forrest Little Bond Scheme
As per the SGM in October the club has relaunched the bond scheme.

Uden Cup Winners
Congratulations to all the Uden Cup team and Manager who finely brought the cup back to Forrest Little GC. The matches in Deer Park were close initially but the last match started to get away from their opposition around the turn. This freed up the leading groups and led to the first match out winning their match on the 18th green and clinching the cup. The final score finished at 8-2 to Forrest Little with the remaining matches declared a half once Forrest Little clinched the title.
There was great celebrations had at both Deer Park following the match and also back in the clubhouse that evening. Im sure all will echo my congratulations to all involved and thank you for a great Summer of interclub entertainment. It was a great pleasure to report each match win along the way.

Best of luck to the team & well done in the home leg.
Ladies Fingal Seniors League 2022
To quote Patricia “Met some lovely ladies, and played some beautiful courses along the way.  We also all played some great golf” – sums up beautifully how the team felt about playing in the Ladies Fingal Seniors this year.  The experience gave us a variety of golf clubs to play, the challenges of competing and an enjoyable atmosphere.  And compete we did as Fidelma said “no bother to us gals”.   It was a very close-run competition and, unfortunately, we didn’t make it to the semi finals ….. this year!!  Thank you to all the ladies who participated – you were absolutely brilliant and a very special “thank you” to Jacinta who managed the teams playing at Forrest Little.  Photos below are of the two teams who played in our last match against Malahide Golf Club.

Forrest Little Golf Classic
The annual event of the Forrest Little Golf Classic will be taking place on Saturday the 1st October.

This is mainly a fun day in Forrest Little and is a chance to invite friends/relations/guests out to play our lovely golf course – maybe win a prize - and at the same time helping our club raise some funding for upcoming projects.

Together last year, we raised the incredible sum of €17,500 to help purchase a Gator work Buggy for our club. This was a remarkable achievement by our members and we are hoping to achieve a similar amount this year.

In order to continue on from last year, we need your help and support. Some of our members voluntarily contribute a lot of their time to the running and progression of our great club, and some – for various different reasons – can’t. But this a chance for all our members to support the club and contribute to upcoming projects for the improvement of our club and course.

So, firstly, I am simply asking you to participate in the Golf Classic by playing as part of a team or entering in a team for the event. The playing fee is €50 for each individual or €200 for a team of 4.
Secondly, I am asking for sponsorship. There are lots of members in a position to sponsor a hole/tee box for €100, (you may sponsor as many holes/Tee Boxes as you wish) and I would ask them to put their name forward to support our cause. Remember, even if you can’t take part on the day, you can still be kind enough to sponsor us.

Thirdly, as we are holding a raffle, we are looking for prizes. So, if you are able to offer a prize, please contact us and do so.

The Annual Forrest Little Golf Classic will be held on:
Saturday the 1st October
Tee times are from 7:30 to 15:00
Booking for slots is already available on the BRS and payment can be made on the day of the Classic.

Thank you to Dean Mulligan who was the first member to offer hole sponsorship!

All the greens tees & approaches were topped dressed recently.

Weeds throughout the course are being spot sprayed which will help with presentation and a much cleaner course.

A granular fertilizer has been applied to our tees and approaches, which will keep the plant healthy as we head into Autumn and Winter.

Lady Captains Prize
Lady Captain Paula's golf days took place on Sat 16th and Sat 23rd July when over 80 ladies and Juniors/Juveniles competed for the coveted Lady Captain Prize 2022. The weather was very kind on both days despite a little rain on Day 2. The best 15 ladies headed out early on Sat 23rd, followed by the other qualifiers. Our Juvenile girls presented strawberries and cream to the ladies at the 10th tee, a tradition long held in Forrest Little. The girls did a fantastic job and the "lunch" provided a welcome break!
The Competition Committee worked late into the afternoon to process the results as the Lady Captain Paula, her family and guests, committee members and other officers of the club, with the Forrest Little ladies, gathered for the evening dinner. An air of anticipation was evident as we all awaited the announcement of the winners.
Following the tasty dinner, Competition Secretary Geraldine Finnegan  began the presentation of prizes to the many prizewinners, both men and women. The prizes were beautiful, a selection of trendy jewellery and some fashionable handbags.
The highlight of the evening was the announcement of a most popular winner in Eileen Judd, who, to the applause of the ladies and guests, accepted her prize with delight and pride, regaling us with the story of her rise to fame!! Members of her family were in on the secret and were there to see her receive her prize.
Unfortunately, Tony Judd, her son and private coach, was unable to attend as he was away. I'm sure he was very proud of his Mam and will celebrate with her in style on his return.
All in all, a fantastic night was held by all! Congratulations to Lady Captain Paula on the success of her prize days 2022.

Fire Door Replacement
The escape door at the snooker room entrance was recently replaced with a metal door. The council have decided to replace to escape door in the men's locker room with the same door. This will hopefully be completed by the end of August.

Locker Room Security
The council recently approved the upgrade of the security of the ladies and gents locker rooms. The keypads and locking systems to all door into the locker rooms have been reinstated and now require a code to gain access. The code for all these doors is 2579. please ensure the doors are kept closed at all times.

Dress Code
This month coming I will be updating our course and clubhouse dress code to better reflect current fashion trends in both golf apparel and acceptable attire in the clubhouse. This will be agreed in the August meeting and will be published to the membership in due course.

Inter Club Team News
O'Grady Cup
The O'Grady Cup Team play Westmanstown GC today at 4pm. There are 2 matches at home & 3 matches away. This is the semi final stage so lets cheer on the team and lets make it two teams in a final this summer. Best of luck to the team playing today.
Uden Cup
The Uden Cup Team recently played their semi final match against Malahide GC last Saturday.
They played 3 matches at home and 2 matches away.
Some matches were very close. We won the second match in Malahide on the 14th. A great win away!
The first match went down the 19th and we unfortunately lost that.
At home the first match went to the 20th and we won.
The second match went down the 19th and the team birdied it to win.
Finally, the third match, after being down most of the match, won on the 18th green. Overall a great performance by all team members and good luck to them in the Final against Deer Park GC.

The date for the final is to be confirmed at this point.
There will be a five matches at home first followed by five matches away in Deer Park the following week.

We hope that as many members can make it out to support the team.

We will update the membership with the date and time of the matches when it is confirmed.

Course News
Course Masterplan Update
Ken Kearney recently submitted the suggested Master plan for the golf course and the plan was discussed in the June council meeting. The council voted to undertake initial works on holes 1, 2, 3, 5, 17 & 18. We have reverted back to Ken Kearney who has now gone out to course development companies to tender the works. The companies have a deadline of 5th August to submit their application and quotation for the works involved. This will leave the council to approve the successful applicant at the August council meeting. Updates to follow when I have them.
After high winds at the weekend, we had an unseasonal amount of leaves fall throughout the course. These will be blown into the rough where the mower will mulch them.
Greens: The greens held up really well throughout the high heat in the past 2 weeks. Overnight irrigation along with hand watering during the day were key to keeping drought stress to a minimum. That allowed us to topdress the greens on Monday. They have since been watered, cut and had a foliar feed applied and are looking really good heading into the bank holiday weekend.
Tees: The tees are in good shape after high temps. Again, overnight irrigation and hand watering were key. The tees, along with the approaches, were top dressed this week which will help with smoothness and firmness.

Captains Prize 2022
The Captains Prize was held over the past couple of weekends. Course News
Sports Capital Grant
The club was awarded a sports capital grant in excess of €92,000 in the early part of the year. The course & greens committee recruited Ken Kearney to develop a course master plan that will enable the club to best use the sports grant to develop our course. The grant was specifically applied for to redevelop our bunkers. Ken Kearney has therefore created a master plan around this and submitted it to the course & greens committee last week. The master plan was presented to the management council and our course of action will be discussed at this months council meeting.
When we have news on the course of action we will update you in due course.
The club would like to thank Padraic Robinson and Sean Dunne for the work both put into the application for the Sports Capital Grant.

Divot Bags
In other course news could we request that members return divot bags to the first tee stand if you have any extra bags lying around the car or locker?
The team having been busy spraying any remaining trees that had weeds growing.
Bunkers are being edged this week also.
A granular feed has been applied to the tees and approaches too.
